Astana, formerly known as Akmola until 1998 and Tselinograd until 1992, has been the capital of Kazakhstan since 1997. Astana is the second largest city in the country after Almaty, the former capital, with an official population of 775,800 people. It is located in the northern part of Kazakhstan in the Akmola region.
In 1995, the city was designated as the future capital of the newly independent country and the new capital was officially moved from Almaty December 10, 1997. New Astana city was officially presented in 1998.
