    Recognized by Louisville Magazine as Louisville's "Best Event," the 46th annual U.S. Bank Kentucky Derby Festival Great Balloon Race will come together with the 26th annual U.S. Bank Kentucky Derby Festival Great Balloon Glow and other events to create the U.S. Bank Kentucky Derby Festival Great BalloonFest.

    Taking place the weekend before the Kentucky Derby, these five events attract tens of thousands of spectators to the Kentucky Exposition Center and other locations throughout Greater Louisville.

Opening Night at the Downs

    Opening Night is a "Dress to Impress" occasion. Ladies are encouraged to wear party and cocktail dresses and men are encouraged to wear sharp pants and a dress shirt; a tie is optional. Dawn at the Downs

    Dawn at the Downs is a popular tradition for both Louisvillians and visitors, giving Kentucky Derby fans the opportunity to see the contenders train for the big race, while listening to expert commentary. Narrated by resident expert handicapper, Joe Kristufek. Listen as Kristufek announces the horses on the track, evaluates their workouts, discusses their past performances, and provides insight to the Kentucky Derby & Oaks races.

    Tickets start at $37 for an adult, and include a reserved dining seat and breakfast chef's table.

Pegasus Parade

  • The 2018 Pegasus Parade will march down Broadway on Thursday, May 3. This family-friendly annual event showcases some of the nation's finest marching bands and equestrian units, along with inflatable characters and colorful floats.

    Over the years, the Pegasus Parade has featured a wide variety of celebrities, including Grand Marshals such as Muhammad Ali, John Wayne, Loretta Lynn, William Shatner, Bill Monroe, Diane Sawyer, Colonel Harland Sanders, Rick Pitino, John Calipari, Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf and the 2013 University of Louisville Men's and Women's Basketball teams.

    Originating in 1956 on a budget of only $640, the Republic Bank Pegasus Parade is the Kentucky Derby Festival's oldest event. Today, the Pegasus Parade is one of the largest in the country, contributing an estimated impact of more than $22 million to the local economy.

    The parade route is just steps from our hotel on Broadway.
